Why can an IVF cycle may be canceled, postponed or not completed ?
Almost every woman starting an IVF cycle knows that pregnancy and childbirth are not guaranteed. But many are surprised if they fail to transfer the embryo.
Here are some possible reasons why your IVF cycle may be delayed, canceled, or embryo transfer not achieved.
E2 ( estradiol ) level :
Estradiol levels are too high. This can lead to ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), a condition that, if left untreated, can become dangerous for the health because water released from follicles can interfere in lungs and create even breathing problems. In these cases, the embryo transfer will be done on a frozen cycle
Not enough follicles to develop:
This is when the ovaries do not respond as well as stimulating drugs are expected. How many “not enough” follicles? The definition of “”too low”” varies between doctors.
Eggs are not retrieved. Theoretically, each follicle should contain an egg. But sometimes the follicles are empty. You may have many follicles, but you cannot extract eggs from them.
There are no embryos to transfer:
metimes, even after extracting a large number of eggs, fertilization does not occur. This means that there will be no embryos to transfer.
In addition, sometimes the eggs are fertilized, but the resulting embryos are in poor health or “delayed” in development before they can be transferred. Another reason you may not have embryos to transfer is that the results of genetic screening for PGS/ PGD indicate that embryos have genetic or chromosomal problems.
