Frequently Asked Questions about IVF
What tests are necessary to start the IVF procedure?
We need to see the hormone tests of the woman, mainly the AMH and FSH, also the Prolactin-TSH-Estradiol-LH, together with serology tests HIV, Anti HCV, HBsAg. A full gynecologic ultrasound scan is also necessary to see the lining of the womb and to understand if there are any unwanted structures such as myomas, fibroids, cysts. From the man, we need the sperm count. All tests shall be not more than 4 months old.
Can I get the tests in Turkey?
Yes, you can get all tests done in Turkey however it’s always better to see the tests beforehand to understand more about the biology of the woman and also to see if there is any problem that may prevent the start of the treatment.
What about tests for multiple IVF failures including miscarriages?
This requires deep analysis of the previous cycles however mainly Lupus, ACA IgG, ACA IgM, CD 19-56 ( natural killer cells), and Karyotype of the couple is necessary. But please contact us for details.
How long after starting stimulation will egg collection be?
Ovulation induction may last approximately 12 days.
What monitoring normally takes place during the stimulation phase of the treatment (e.g. blood tests for estrogen, for progesterone, and scans)?
Follicle measurements and hormone levels in the blood will indicate the time for oocyte aspiration.
What will you be looking for (in the monitoring) to decide when egg collection will be?
Monitoring of ovarian response is performed by ultrasound scans and blood hormone levels.
Is there anything we can do to improve the quality of the eggs or the sperm? (e.g. lifestyle factors or supplements)
At this moment you can not do anything to increase the quality of egg and sperm. Stop smoking if you do.
How many eggs will you be expecting at the egg collection?
10-12 eggs are expected to retrieve.
Will I have a general anesthetic or sedation during the procedure?
You will have sedation during oocyte pick-up and not feel any pain.
What pain relief will I need/get after egg collection?
You will need mild pain killers after oocyte pick-up.
What does ICSI mean?
ICSI means intracytoplasmic sperm injection also known as “ microinjection “ This technique is done by the embryologist under special machines where the embryologist cuts the outer layer of the eggs and places the sperms in.
When is it favorable to use this technique?
ICSI is used in low sperm count cases normally. However, due to its high advancement in fertilization rates, IVF Turkey uses this method for all patients routinely.
Can ICSI be done also on frozen eggs and frozen sperms?
ICSI is done in a fresh manner which means that frozen sperms and frozen eggs shall first be thawed and then ICSI shall be performed.
What about the IMSI technique?
As IVF Turkey we also use the IMSI technique which is more favorable to use for cases where sperm morphology is the main problem.
How do you protect the embryos?
Embryos are placed into special incubators at 37 degrees and their developments are followed daily and noted in the system.
How do you prevent embryos to be mixed?
This is a very important matter. We sometimes hear on the news that embryos are lost or mixed and lost due to automatized systems. For this reason, we use manual crosschecks on the embryos daily by different embryologists. This allows us not to make any mistake on this important matter.
How do the embryos grow?
- 18-19th hour after the egg collection fertilization happens.
- 25-26th hour after the egg collection -2 cell embryo –
- 42-44th hour after the egg collection- 4 cell embryo –
- 66-68th hour after the egg collection – 8 cell embryo –
- 106-108th hour after the egg collection-blastocyst stage embryo ( most cells)
How many days after egg collection will the embryo transfer take place?
Embryo transfer is done 3 to 5 days after oocyte pick-up. Day 5 embryos are preferred which are called blastocysts.
How many cells would you expect them to be by then? (grateful for your advice on blastocysts)
Compact embryos, blastocyst stage embryos have the highest number of cells more than 50 cells.
How do you grade the embryos?
Embryo grading is performed according to the number and the appearance of the cells (blastomeres)
Under what conditions would you freeze any ‘spare’ embryos?
If spare embryos are good in shape and minister of blastomeres is appropriate it means that they are worth freezing.
How long after embryo transfer will it be safe for me to fly back to my home country?
You can travel 1-2 days after embryo transfer.
What medications will I use after the embryo transfer?
The woman will use progesterone medications such as Prolutex or Crinone gel. Dozes can differ from woman to woman.
When and how is the pregnancy test performed?
The pregnancy test is performed after 12 days of embryo transfer. The woman shall do a beta-HCG test in the blood. The test shall be renewed every 3 days and the results shall double for a progressing pregnancy.
When does the clinical pregnancy happen?
Clinical pregnancy means the fetal heartbeat of the baby seen on the ultrasound. This mainly happens 3-4 weeks after the pregnancy test.
